Project Description

Installation:

Mastic Asphalt

Description:

The unique and historic nature of the project, along with the challenges working on this type of site brings is another example of the work Sussex Asphalte undertakes on heritage buildings.

The project involved the repair to the surface of the Castle’s North West Tower. The tower itself experiences heavy foot traffic with up to 1000 people per day visiting the tower. As a result, repairs using mastic asphalt offered the ideal solution being a strong, seamless, robust and easy maintainable, long lasting covering. It provides resistance to all types of weather situations and changes in temperature – significant factors given the exposed nature of the Tower.

With regard to high skill and technical issues, in some areas the screed surface of the Tower was uneven and loose, an application of 30mm asphalt was made to allow for this.

The 150mm asphalt skirting to the Tower walls would normally be laid with a solid asphalt angle fillet at the base dressed into a chase at the top. However given the sensitive nature of the building Heritage England would not allow a chase to be cut. Therefore an alternative solution had to be found, which was to install a wide angle fillet as this will support its own weight.

The materials used on this project was IKO Permaphalt Polymer Modified Recreational Duty Mastic Asphalt applied to 50m2 and 28 linear metres.
