Sussex Asphalte were recently appointed to renew more than 1600m² of failing roof coverings at St Thomas A Becket Catholic Primary School in Eastbourne. Following a detailed roof inspection, including core sample analysis, Sussex Asphalte were able to work closely with our client (Morgan Carn if you want to include them) to establish a suitable solution to prevent further water ingress and provide peace of mind to the end user.
Our roof inspection revealed that the felt overlay had failed significantly in numerous locations, resulting in the system becoming saturated. Fortunately, the original mastic asphalt roof covering had provided a secondary defense resulting in only isolated areas of water ingress into the school below.
Our recommendation was to strip the defective coverings back to the original asphalt and install a new IKO ULTRA Gold 20 system, complete with new PIR insulation to comply with current Building Regulations, providing the client with a 20-year guarantee.
Works were undertaken during term time and, as a result, careful planning and liaison was required between Sussex Asphalte, the school and Morgan Carn to ensure disruption was minimised and all necessary safeguarding procedures were in place. Furthermore, space was extremely limited for storage of materials and we were required to make use of our extensive supply chain network to carefully implement timed deliveries and collections from site to further reduce interference and disruption to the day to day running of the school.
