Sussex Asphalte was appointed to undertake remedial works to Raglan Car Park following significant fire damage to the underside of the structure. The incident had compromised the integrity of the existing waterproofing system, making a full renewal of the car park deck covering essential to restore both performance and durability. The project involved the removal of the existing 30mm paving grade asphalt across the affected areas. Once stripped back, the substrate was thoroughly inspected to ensure it remained suitable to receive the new system. A replacement paving grade asphalt covering was then installed, providing a robust, hard-wearing surface capable of withstanding vehicular traffic while delivering reliable waterproofing protection to the structure below. As part of the renewal works, Sussex Asphalte took the opportunity to enhance the overall performance of the deck by increasing the thickness of the waterproofing in targeted areas. This allowed for improved formation of falls and helped to eliminate areas of standing water that had previously contributed to deterioration. By addressing these issues during installation, the new system offers improved drainage efficiency, reducing long-term maintenance requirements and extending the lifespan of the surface. The completed works have reinstated the car park to a high standard, delivering a durable, well-drained, and resilient surface designed to perform effectively for years to come.
Once the area had been removed, in became clear the client’s requirement for a ponding-free car park would require considerably more material than thought at tender stage. Whilst 30mm asphalt was removed, in areas up to 140mm asphalt was installed to give the area the best chance possible to drain effectively to the leading drip edge. IKO hot charges were utilised which in turn brought its own issues, constantly being challenged by the weather, and resident disruption withing the area. 7 hot charges were used in total to install new mastic asphalt over the course of a 3-week window. Speaking with the operatives, never before had they laid asphalt over 100mm,so a first for Sussex Asphalte. The car park was initially only closed for 4 weeks, including over the Christmas break, and Sussex Asphalte managed to adhere to this tight timeline and complete the works within budget, whilst maintaining healthy relations with nearby residents
