Project Description

Installation:

Mastic Asphalt

Description:

The project entailed the stripping of the current asphalt, concrete and screed back to the structural deck and the relaying of asphalt. The building is based on top of a high-level multi-storey car park and is a school playground in a busy central location opposite domestic houses and a Sainsbury’s superstore.

Our highly skilled asphalters were able to create falls in asphalt and improve drainage in the roof. Due to the position/location of roof the hot charge had to pull up on New England Street, asphalt run up by wheelbarrow on a scaffold ramp to the car park roof.  (A hot charge delivery had to be chosen as such a large quantity of 1707m²).

Due to the size and complexity of project extensive project management was key to the running of the siteManagement between the contracts manager, site supervisor Matthew Coulter who holds an SMSTS certificate as well as being Mastic Asphalt qualified for over 30 years and had Mark our third year apprentice (who has since qualified) working with him, our own NSRSWA supervisor who we specifically sent for a course of training and certification to be certified for traffic management, help from directors here at Sussex Asphalte and highways management it was vital that all these personnel worked in cohesion with each other to assist in the smooth running of the site and project. In addition, it has involved liaising with the car park management to ensure as minimal disruption to the active car park below.

Since 2008 IKO Group have been running their carbon offsetting programme, offsetting the carbon dioxide emissions from their Mastic Asphalt to make the product CarbonZero. Working with CO2balance they have calculated the carbon emissions from the Mastic Asphalt and thenoffset this carbon footprint through a selection of carbon offset projects, most notably CO2balance’s
Kenyan Energy Efficient Stove Project and Uganda Borehole Rehabilitation Project. This report covers the carbon offset linked to the sale of Mastic Asphalt for the St Bartholomew’s School Project and outlines the positive impacts on the local communities in Kenya and Uganda that have occurred thanks to the offset program.
