Project Description

Installation:

Mastic Asphalt

Description:

The project involved applying three coats IKO Permaphalt tanking to two separate underground rooms, followed by three coats IKO Permaphalt asphalt to the terrace above.

Tanking: having a history of damp proofing problems with two underground rooms (changing room and swimming pool plant room) mastic asphalt was identified as the most robust and proven material. The work involved priming nearly 3m high walls, the applying three coats of Permaphalt tanking to the walls and floated to a lapless finish. The 10mm coats were applied to the horizontal, then a three coat solid asphalt angle fillet was applied to all abutments ensuring a complete seamless asphalt coating. This asphalt was carefully loaded with concrete to the horizontal and back filled walls to the vertical.

Terrace: After years of waterproofing problems with the felt membrane under the terrace, the terrace slabs were lifted and the defective membrane was removed. The client was seeking a proven robust product with a guaranteed history. Asphalt was selected as it suited the project, providing waterproofing and a solid hard wearing covering that enabled other trades to undertake their follow on works on an asphalt base.

The build up for the terrace was three 10mm coats of Permaphalt asphalt into a water dispersing trim to the front and three coat skirting and fillet to the rear, providing a seamless membrane to the terrace above the underground rooms.

Additional Information:

The project provides an example of the versatility of the use of mastic asphalt in a tanking project to deliver a waterproofing solution to underground rooms as part of a larger asphalt project. The materials and labour provided a 20 year insurance backed guarantee and the confidence of a proven product laid by skilled trained operatives who had completed a four year apprenticeship at Hackney College
