Sussex Asphalte hits the heights at UK Roofing Awards

Sussex Asphalte has marked our 70th Anniversary year in style by scooping a prestigious national roofing award for our work on one of the Country’s most important monuments – St Paul’s Cathedral.

At the 2018 UK Roofing Awards Sussex Asphalte (in partnership with IKO PLC) won the Mastic Asphalt Award for renewing the asphalt on the Stone Gallery on St Paul’s Cathedral.

Working on such a prestigious and sensitive site required careful project management to protect and renew the fabric of one of the most important buildings in the UK. Sussex Asphalte stripped asphalt on the Stone Gallery that was originally laid in 1906 and had only recently began to fail – demonstrating the longevity and reliability of mastic asphalt as a robust and seamless waterproofing material. Working in phases to renew sections of the Gallery allowed continued public access to sections of the walkway that circles the Dome of St Paul’s.

In addition to the St Paul’s Cathedral project, Sussex Asphalte was also shortlisted in the same category for its work installing asphalt to the North West Tower of Bodiam Castle.

Both projects required skilled craftsmanship from Mastic Asphalters who were supported through their Mastic Asphalt Apprenticeships by Sussex Asphalte.

Commenting on the Award, Directors Julian and Matthew Coulter said “It’s great for a local family owned Company to have its craftmanship recognised in this way. For the award to coincide with our 70th anniversary is very special. All of the Mastic Asphalters who worked on this project achieved the Level 3 NVQ Mastic Asphalt Apprenticeship delivered by New City College Hackney. It illustrates how important it is to support apprenticeships to sustain our craft”.

The work to renew the asphalt on the Stone Gallery has been visited by construction industry experts and promoted by the Mastic Asphalt Council as an exemplar demonstrating the unique properties and aesthetic appeal of Mastic Asphalt.
